Waste and Recycling
Issues with overflowing landfill sites are a problem in many countries
and Malaysia is no exception. Some countries are attempting to overcome this
problem by incinerating the waste. However, the quantum of waste which is
incinerated is small and incineration is not without its problems.
We have to do our part in ensuring that the amount of waste going to
landfills is kept at a minimum. These are things we can do :
Bring your own bags when doing grocery shopping instead of using
plastic bags.
Buy in bulk. This will save you money and also reduce the amount of
packaging used.
Bring your own to the office instead of using disposable cups
Buy reusable containers for storing food
Buy sturdy grocery shopping bags which can be reused again and again
Bring your own container when buying takeout food
Use energy efficient light bulbs which not only lasts longer, but
save on electricity as well
Sell or donate goods which you no longer want to use
Use rechargeable batteries
Participate in your community recycling programme (if there are no
programmes, start one)
Recycle car batteries and motor oils
Separate your rubbish into recyclable and non-recyclable
Start a composit pit using your organic waste (but not in highly
populated areas as this can attract rodents and pests). This becomes
good and natural fertilizer for our plants
Use items which have been made from recycled materials (toilet
paper, bottles, containers)
