Renouncing Malaysian citizenship is a voluntary act by an individual to cease being a Malaysian citizen. Such applications are typically made when the individual has already acquired, or is in the process of acquiring, citizenship of another country.
This is provided for under Article 23 of the Federal Constitution, as Malaysia does not permit dual or multiple citizenship.
Eligibility Requirements
In general, an individual who wishes to renounce Malaysian citizenship must:
- Be at least 21 years of age (there is no age limit for married women).
- Be of sound mind.
- Have acquired, or be in the process of acquiring, citizenship of another country.
The decision to renounce Malaysian citizenship is permanent and irrevocable. Once an individual renounces their Malaysian citizenship, they permanently lose all rights and privileges associated with being a Malaysian citizen.
