Malaysian citizenship refers to an individual's legal status as a citizen of Malaysia. This status is important as it establishes a person's formal relationship with the country, including the right to live, work, and enjoy the benefits and services provided by the Government.
Acquiring Malaysian Citizenship
Under the Federal Constitution, Malaysian citizenship may generally be acquired through the following methods:
By Birth
- Born in Malaysia, provided that at least one parent is a Malaysian citizen.
- Born outside Malaysia, provided that the father is a Malaysian citizen.
By Registration
- For certain individuals, such as the spouse or child of a Malaysian citizen.
By Naturalisation
- Foreign nationals who have resided in Malaysia for a specified period and meet the prescribed eligibility requirements.
