The KEJARA system (Demerit Points System for Road Traffic Offences) was introduced by JPJ to educate and discipline drivers who commit traffic violations by imposing demerit points.
How does KEJARA Work?
Each traffic offence carries a certain number of demerit points. If the total points exceed the limit, actions such as suspension or revocation of the license will be imposed.
Examples of Offences & KEJARA Points:
- Driving above speed limit: 6–8 points
- Running a red light: 10 points
- Not wearing seat belt: 3 points
- Using a mobile phone while driving: 10 points
Demerit Points & Actions:
- 20 points: License suspended for 6 months
- 40 points: License suspended for 12 months
- 60 points: License revoked
If the license is suspended 3 times in 5 years, it will be revoked, and the driver must reapply from the beginning.
Demerit points will be automatically reduced by half after 1 year if no new offence is committed.
