The Legal Companion Service is an initiative by the Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman, JBG) to provide non-legal support assistance to children who are victims of sexual crimes.
This service is offered to those who meet all the following conditions:
- Malaysian citizen children
- Victims of sexual offence cases
- Under 18 years old at the time proceedings begin
Roles of the legal companion:
- Advising guardians on legal matters
- Obtaining information related to the charges in any proceedings
- Accompanying the victim or speaking on behalf of the victim during proceedings with the court’s permission
- Advising guardians on possible civil actions that may be initiated by or on behalf of the victim
