Legal Aid
The Legal Companion Service is an initiative by the Legal Aid Department (Jabatan Bantuan Guaman, JBG) to provide non-legal support assistance to children who are victims of sexual crimes. This service is offered to those who meet all the following conditions: Malaysian citizen children Victims of sexual offence cases Under 18 years old at the time proceedings begin Roles of the legal companion: Advising guardians on legal matters Obtaining information related to the charges in any proceedings Accompanying the victim or speaking on behalf of the victim during proceedings with the court’s permission Advising guardians on possible civil actions that may be initiated by or on behalf of the victim
The legal services provided by the Legal Aid Department (JBG) aim to give access to justice for the lower- and middle-income groups. There are minimum fees and contributions imposed to obtain legal aid services from JBG. Key information on legal aid fees and contributions: Registration of Legal Aid Services Minimum fee: RM10 during registration for an approved application Legal aid services provided: Legal advice Legal aid (civil / syariah / criminal) Mediation Legal companion services Contributions Imposed on applicants with financial resources exceeding RM50,000 annually after completing the means test for eligibility. Contribution amounts are based on the Legal Aid (Fees and Contributions) (Amendment) Regulations 2023: Full aid: Annual financial resources RM50,000 and below Partial aid: Annual financial resources RM50,001 – RM70,000 Partial aid with approval from YBM: Annual financial resources above RM70,000
