Next Generation Malaysian Emergency Response Services 999 (NG MERS 999) is a modernisation initiative by the Government through the Ministry of Communications to enhance and modernise the management of the emergency response system nationwide.
Main Functions of NG MERS 999:
- Receive emergency calls from the public
- Use a single call taking concept, where only the relevant data is forwarded to the respective emergency agencies, except for the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), which continues to use the double call taking concept
- Determine the caller’s location for immediate assistance
- Coordinate emergency responses more quickly
The main agencies connected through NG MERS 999 are:
- Royal Malaysia Police
- Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia
- Ministry of Health Malaysia
- Malaysia Civil Defence Force
- Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency
The 999 emergency line must only be used for genuine emergencies. Any form of misuse constitutes an offence under Subsection 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Individuals found guilty may be subject to:
- A maximum fine of RM500,000;
- Imprisonment of up to 2 years, or both.
For offences that continue after conviction, an additional fine of RM5,000 may be imposed for each day the offence continues.
