Consideration and Counseling
If you and your spouse are considering whether to separate or reconcile, this stage is often filled with emotions and uncertainty. At this point, support from family as well as accurate information about rights and available options is crucial. Explore the information and services such as counseling, protection, and legal advice offered by religious offices or government departments to assist you and your spouse during this stage.

Filing for Divorce
For couples who decide to proceed with a divorce, it is important to understand the type of divorce relevant to their situation, religion, and state laws. Couples must also submit the appropriate documents and claims as required. For Muslim couples, divorce falls under the jurisdiction of the Syariah Lower Court of the state where the applicant resides, while divorce for non-Muslim couples is handled by the High Court.

Court Hearing and Divorce Confirmation
This stage is where the decision to divorce is brought before a judge for legal confirmation. Couples must submit complete documentation, attend the hearing sessions, and explain the reasons for divorce and any related claims. Whether in the Syariah Court for Muslim couples or the High Court for non-Muslim couples, the final decision will only be made after the judge reviews all facts and evidence presented.

Post-Divorce Phase
The post-divorce phase is a period of adjustment in terms of emotions, finances, and responsibilities. For Muslim couples, reconciliation (rujuk) is possible if the divorce declared was talak satu (first pronouncement) or talak dua (second pronouncement). Learn about the steps required should you choose to reconcile During this phase, former spouses may also file claims for child custody, alimony, and division of matrimonial property in court.
