Under the Federal Constitution, there are several circumstances under which an individual may apply for Malaysian citizenship.

Birth-Related Circumstances

Birth in Malaysia (Article 14 of the Federal Constitution)

Individuals born in Malaysia may acquire Malaysian citizenship based on the citizenship status of their mother or father.

Birth Outside Malaysia (Article 14 of the Federal Constitution)

Individuals born outside Malaysia may acquire Malaysian citizenship based on the citizenship status of their father.

Persona

Individuals Born in the Federation Before Independence Day (31 August 1957) (Article 16 of the Federal Constitution)

Individuals born in the Federation (excluding Sabah and Sarawak) before Independence Day may apply for Malaysian citizenship, subject to specific conditions, including:

Have resided in the Federation for the preceding seven years, including at least five years immediately before the application.
Intend to reside permanently in the Federation.
Be of good character.
Possess a basic knowledge of the Malay language.

Family-Related Circumstances

Special Application (Article 15A of the Federal Constitution)

Individuals under the age of 21 may apply for Malaysian citizenship under special circumstances, subject to the Government's discretion.

Foreign Wife of a Malaysian Citizen (Article 15(1) of the Federal Constitution)

A foreign woman who is legally married to a Malaysian citizen may apply for Malaysian citizenship, subject to the following conditions:

Has held Permanent Resident (MyPR) status for at least two years.
The marriage remains legally valid.

Child of a Malaysian Citizen Under the Age of 21 (Article 15(2) of the Federal Constitution)

Individuals under the age of 21 may apply for Malaysian citizenship if at least one parent is a Malaysian citizen.

Naturalisation

Citizenship Application for Individuals Aged 21 and Above (Article 19 of the Federal Constitution)

Foreign nationals aged 21 years and above may apply for Malaysian citizenship, subject to specific requirements, including:

Have resided in Malaysia for at least 12 years.
Be of good character.
Demonstrate a good command of the Malay language.
Be supported by two Malaysian citizen sponsors who are not related to the applicant.
