In Malaysia, owning a driving license is a requirement for individuals who wish to drive vehicles on the road. The Malaysian Driving License (LMM) is an official document that allows an individual to legally drive motor vehicles on the road according to the law.
Types of Driving Licenses:
Learner’s Driving License (LDL)
A temporary license for driving learners
Validity period: 3 or 6 months, up to a maximum of 2 years
LDL holders are only allowed to drive under the supervision of a Driving Institute instructor or JPJ examiner
Probationary Driving License (PDL)
Issued after passing the practical test part 2 & 3 by JPJ and the test results have been updated and remain valid within one year
PDL validity: 2 years
Competent Driving License (CDL)
A competent license issued after the probationary license (PDL) expires if there are no summonses involving KEJARA (demerit points)
Renewal period for citizens: minimum 1 year up to a maximum of 10 years if not blacklisted
Renewal period for non-citizens: minimum 1 year up to a maximum of 5 years if not blacklisted
Vocational Driving Licenses (PSV / GDL / Conductor)
Conductor
- Malaysian citizens only
- 18 years old and above
- A conductor license is required for individuals working as bus conductors in public service vehicles (Sabah & Sarawak only)
PSV
- Malaysian citizens only
- 21 years old and above
- A license to drive public transport vehicles such as taxis, buses, e-hailing, mini buses/vans
GDL
- Malaysian citizens only
- 21 years old and above
- A license to drive goods vehicles such as heavy motorcars (lorries), motorcars, and motorcycles
