Optimal oral health refers to the overall healthy condition of the mouth, teeth, and gums, where it is free from diseases or problems that could affect function, comfort, and quality of life for individuals and families. Free from oral diseases: No cavities (dental caries) No gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis) No infections or mouth ulcers Teeth and gums functioning well: Able to chew food properly No pain while eating or speaking Able to pronounce words correctly Teeth are well-aligned without bite function problems Good appearance
To ensure optimal dental health, the practice of good oral care and prevention of dental-related diseases is very important. In general, parents must ensure for themselves and their families: Brush teeth for 2 minutes at least twice a day using the correct technique Use fluoride toothpaste Control sugar intake and encourage drinking plain water Undergo dental check-ups with a registered dental practitioner (government or private clinic) at least once a year Use of mouthwash and dental floss should be on the advice of a registered dental practitioner Annual dental check-ups for yourself and your family are very important to identify dental problems or diseases so they can be prevented and treated at an early stage.
In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) through the Oral Health Programme strives to provide education, treatment, and preventive services to all levels of society, starting from infants, children, adolescents up to the elderly. Dental services at government healthcare facilities: Dental check-ups and fillings Extractions and scaling (cleaning of tartar) Oral health education in schools and communities Emergency dental treatment Early screening of oral diseases and oral cancer
School dental health services are provided by MOH to all students (Year 1 to Form 5) in all government and government-aided schools every year. School dental health services include: Oral health education Dental check-ups Clinical preventive treatment Basic dental treatments (scaling, fillings, and extractions) Emphasis on the correct toothbrushing technique is also applied through this service programme.
