The Rukun Tetangga Area (KRT) is a voluntary or community-based organisation established under the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) through the Rukun Tetangga Act 2012 (Act 751). It plays a leading role in promoting safety, well-being, harmony and services within the community.
KRT also serves as a community facilitator and connector in implementing various activities towards sustainable, inclusive and competitive community development.
Functions and duties of the KRT committee:
- Carry out any activities to enhance and strengthen the spirit of neighbourliness, unity, goodwill, harmony, comfort, peace, cooperation, safety, welfare, health, economic well-being and quality of life among members of the community
- Receive information, observe and investigate all issues relating to community conflicts within the area and report such information, observations and investigations to the Director
- Take any necessary or appropriate measures to enable residents to protect themselves against any criminal activities or disasters
- Provide mediation within the community for the purpose of reconciliation or otherwise resolving any disputes or disagreements among members of the community
- Carry out any other functions or duties as directed by the Director-General from time to time.
