The main function of the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) is to extinguish, fight, prevent and control fires, as well as to provide efficient and effective humanitarian services, including the protection of lives and property during any disaster or emergency.
The functions carried out by the Department in accordance with the provisions under Sections 5(1) & (2) of the Fire Services Act 1988 (Act 341) are as follows:
- Extinguish, fight, prevent and control fires.
- Protect lives and property in the event of a fire.
- Ensure the availability of fire escapes and their proper maintenance and regulation.
- Conduct investigations into the reasons, causes and circumstances of fires.
- Provide humanitarian services, including the protection of lives and property during any disaster.
In addition to its duties under subsection (1), JBPM may carry out any other duties assigned to it by law or otherwise prescribed by the Minister for implementation.
