Form Six studies in Malaysia are one of the pathways after SPM. It prepares students for the Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM), a pre-university qualification recognised domestically and internationally. Malaysian Higher School Certificate (STPM) Equivalent to A-Level Recognised by Cambridge Assessment International Education, United Kingdom Equivalent to a diploma Accepted by the Public Service Department (JPA) for appointments in the public service SPM leavers who meet the general and specific entry requirements are automatically offered Form Six.. The Matriculation Programme is a pre-university pathway offered by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) for SPM leavers who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at higher education institutions (IPT). Fields offered: Science Engineering Accounting Professional Accounting Computer Science General requirements: Malaysian citizen Not more than 20 years old at the time of application Applicant must be a current SPM candidate Basic information: Tuition and accommodation are free Eligible students receive the Student Living Allowance (BSHP) Holders of the MOE Matriculation Certificate may apply for Grade 29 positions in related service schemes in the public service
Foundation (ASASI) is a special pre-university pathway for SPM leavers offered by selected public universities as a direct route into Bachelor’s programmes at the respective university. What is a foundation programme? A one-year (2-semester) pre-university programme Offered directly by public universities (UA) to high-achieving students Focused on specific areas such as science, engineering, medicine, accounting, law, and others General requirements: Applicants must have SPM with at least: Five (credits), including Bahasa Melayu Pass in Sejarah (History) How to apply Applications are made via the UPUOnline system Typically open between February–April each year Must first create a UPU account and purchase a PIN number at BSN
Diploma programmes are a main post-SPM pathway offered by public universities (UA), polytechnics, community colleges, and private institutions. They are more practical and skills-focused, enabling graduates to enter the workforce directly or continue to a degree. General requirements: A minimum of three SPM credits (depending on the course and institution) Must pass Bahasa Melayu Must pass History For certain courses, the requirements may be higher such as: 4-5 SPM credits Requirement of certain subjects (e.g. Mathematics, Science, Principles of Accounting) Institutions offering diplomas Public Universities (UA) such as UiTM, UUM, UTHM, UTeM, etc. Polytechnics Community Colleges Private Colleges and Universities (registered with MQA and MOHE) Duration of study: depending on the course and institution Generally, 2.5 – 3 years for most programmes 2 years for certain programmes Some diploma programmes allow transfer of certain credits when progressing to a Bachelor’s degree, depending on the university, program of study and academic results (CGPA). Applications for Diploma/Foundation at Private Institutions (IPTS) Applications to IPTS can be made through each institution’s portal according to the IPTS requirement. You can also verify IPTS registered with MOHE to ensure your chosen course has either full or provisional accreditation by MQA.
If you are interested in a career as an Education Service Officer (Teacher), you can apply for the Bachelor of Education programme (PISMP) in relevant fields under the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE). The UiTM Pre-Diploma Programme is a special programme offered by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to SPM leavers from the Bumiputera community who do not yet meet direct entry requirements for a diploma but show potential to succeed in higher education. International Pre-University Programmes are academic preparation programmes for SPM leavers (or equivalent) who wish to pursue Bachelor’s degrees abroad or at local universities that adopt international systems. They are pre-degree programmes equivalent to STPM or A-Level, but use internationally recognised syllabi—especially by universities in the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Types of International Pre-U programmes include: A-Level (Cambridge) International Baccalaureate (IB Diploma Programme) Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT/SACEi) Canadian Pre-University (CPU/ICPU) American Degree Foundation Program (ADP) These programmes are open to SPM leavers with scholarships/ sponsorships or on a self-funded basis.
The Outstanding Student Programme (Program Pelajar Cemerlang, PPC) is a government initiative via the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE). It provides a special pathway for high-achieving SPM students to pursue studies overseas in relevant fields and to continue a career as Education Service Officers (Teachers). Duration: 4 years for an overseas degree + 1 year Postgraduate Diploma in Education at an Institute of Teacher Education (IPG).
