Types of National Schools in Malaysia
National schools in Malaysia are managed by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE). They are divided into two main categories:
- National School (SK)
- Using Malay language as the main medium of instruction
- Open to all students regardless of race or religion
- National-Type School (SJK)
- Divided into two types:
National-Type Chinese School (SJKC) – Mandarin language as the medium of instruction
National-Type Tamil School (SJKT) – Tamil language as the medium of instruction
- Open to all students, but the majority are from the Chinese and Indian communities
National Curriculum for Primary Education
The primary level curriculum uses the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR) which includes:
- Malay, English, Mathematics, and Science
- Moral Education/ Islamic Education
- History (from Standard 4)
- Technology Design (RBT)
- Visual Arts and Music
- Physical Education
